La Luz de La Sombra: La Autonomia Guarani de Bolivia

by Adriana Gramly and Steven Luna

Located in southeastern Bolivia, Charagua is one of the largest municipalities in the country and home to approximately 70 Guaraní Indigenous communities.

The Guaraní population makes up nearly half of the people living in Charagua. For the past ten years, the Guaraní of Charagua Iyambae have worked to create Bolivia's first autonomous government for Indigenous peoples.

Along with non-Indigenous citizens, such as Mennonites, settlers of Andean origin, and other white/mestizo individuals who live predominantly in the urban center, Charagua is a multiethnic and multicultural community and a complex attempt at Indigenous self-government.

This short documentary highlights some of those voices working to make this autonomy a lasting achievement for Indigenous communities everywhere, but especially for the Guaraní community.
